This tour begins with a visit to the old Belfast Poor House which was not a pleasant place to be in Victorian Belfast. In 1795 they opened up one of their back fields for the burial of the towns paupers but this was soon to develop into something more and therefore give us the historic site it is today. On this tour you will visit the largest famine grave in Ireland as well as the infamous Cholera Pits where the remains of thousands lie inches beneath the soil. You will also see the graves of the founders of Irish Republicanism who were not only presbyterian but also freemasons and who gave us the present day IRA. In this small cemetery there are over 14,000 people buried which means 14,000 life stories ranging from inventors right though to the extreme poor. You will also hear why lots of those buried are no longer here due to the activities of the notorious bodysnatchers.
The Clifton Street Cemetery Walking Tour runs every Friday at 7pm.
